Enyinnaya Abaribe, the National Assembly senator for Abia South, has chastised members of the All Progressives Grand coalition (APGA) for allegedly forming a coalition with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to reports, during its caucus meeting in Umuahia on Tuesday night, the APGA chapter in Abia State issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Abaribe to clarify his purported brotherhood with the ADC or face sanctions. The statement was signed by Chukwuemeka Nwokoro, the party’s publicity secretary.
In addition to demanding his position on the accusation of anti-party conduct, APGA told the former Senate Minority Leader that no one would be a member of two political parties at the same time.
Senator Abaribe allegedly supported ADC over APGA during meetings at his Aba event center on August 18 and September 23, respectively, according to the party. He was also challenged to personally affirm or reject his claimed defection to ADC.
When Senator Abaribe utilized the party’s platform to win a fifth term in the red chamber, he was also accused of leaving the party and showing contempt for its leadership.
In response, Abaribe said in an interview with Vanguard—through his media assistant, Uchenna Awom—that the party “knew how to access the Senator as its leader in the state and should stop dwelling on rumors.”
Awom claimed that the party’s decision to give Abaribe an ultimatum based on unsubstantiated rumors without first consulting him was unjust.
“Senator Abaribe is still alive,” he said. The party can reach him through all the avenues because he is the APGA leader in Abia. With them, he had no problems. He should be contacted by letter so they can speak with him directly.
“As a seasoned politician, he knows how to go about it,” Awom responded when asked if Abaribe had indeed switched to ADC. Has he informed them that he is no longer with APGA? They don’t merely sit there and twist his arms to get him to say something.
