2023: Saraki, Tambuwal, and others reach agreement on a consensus candidate for the PDP’s presidential candidate

The opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has met to fine-tune strategies for the emergence of a Northern consensus presidential aspirant ahead of the party’s primary, just 48 hours after the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Convention that produced Abdullahi Adamu as a consensus candidate for National Chairman.

Former Senate President Dr Bukola Saraki, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Kawu Baraje, and the immediate past deputy governor of Zamfara State, Mahdi Aliyu were all present at the meeting held in Bauchi State on Sunday.

It may be remembered that the party had its national convention in 2021, electing a northerner as its National Chairman.
As a result, calls for the party’s presidential candidate to come from the South are gathering traction, as the three bigwigs vie for the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2023 general election.

However, speaking to reporters after their meeting, Saraki stated that the PDP is the only option the country has to save it from impending collapse, emphasizing the importance of unity and consensus, as well as the fact that the party is a family that should not tolerate any form of division or faction.

He went on to say that the purpose of his visit was to meet with Governor Mohammed and put their heads together to come up with practical solutions that would unify the party ahead of the 2023 elections.

“We appreciate the fact that three of us have shown an interest in leading this nation,” Saraki stated. We’ve realized that we’re all capable, capable, and qualified to lead this nation. In the end, only one individual will be able to rule our nation in 2023.

“As a result, we’ve decided to work closely together to come up with a solution that everyone can agree on.” We feel that our responsibility is to make things simpler for us; to maintain stability, because if the PDP is stable, Nigeria will be stable as well.

“We’ve all seen that the APC is no longer a party; it’s having trouble running its business.” Anyone who cannot manage rights cannot manage a nation, hence the PDP is Nigerians’ only alternative.

“We feel we must bury our own desire because of that amount of responsibility.” We think that if the three of us – me, Governor Tambuwal, and Governor Mohammed – work together in harmony, commitment, and with a lot of enthusiasm, our nation would have a bright future.

“It is more necessary for us to work together because the country’s unity, stability, and progress are more important than our own objectives.”

In a statement, Muhammad Bello, the Governor of Sokoto State’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, stated that the topic of consensus was at the top of the meeting’s agenda.
