The main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party, has stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission’s refusal to recognize the ruling All Progressives Congress’ activities further confirms its position that the APC lacks the legitimacy and statutory requirements to run in the 2023 general elections.

INEC had already refused to accept the APC’s invitation to its National Executive Committee meeting. The electoral body also rejected the APC’s National Convention, which is set to take place on March 26, 2022.

The PDP reacted by saying that INEC’s decision “further validates” its position that “the APC is a Special Purpose Vehicle in liquidation, on the verge of being wound up, and cannot legitimately generate candidates for the elections.”

The statement, headlined ‘INEC’s Non-Recognition Confirms APC’s Ineligibility for 2023 Elections- PDP,’ was signed by Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary.

“This decision by INEC is, therefore, another unmistakable’red flag’ to intending aspirants on the platform of the APC in the 2023 general elections that the APC has become defunct and cannot validly, legally, or constitutionally field candidates in the 2023 general elections,” the statement read in part.

“Our Party draws attention to the grave significance of INEC’s letter to the APC, dated March 9, 2022, stating that the Commission will not recognize the APC’s NEC meeting scheduled for Thursday, March 17, 2022, due to invalid notice; a development that will invalidate any decision reached at such meeting.”

“Furthermore, INEC’s reference to the APC’s inability to provide the statutory 21-day notice for its National Convention affirms the invalidity and unconstitutionality of any National Convention held by the APC’s illegitimate Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee,” says the statement (CECPC).

“As it is today, the Sword of Damocles hangs perilously on the status of the contraption known as CECPC and the APC itself, regardless of the boldface escapist reasons. This poses an existential challenge to the soulless, precipice-bound collection of pretenders posing as a political party. The PDP had already notified Nigerians, particularly hopefuls on the APC platform, that the APC had become legally non-operational when it dissolved its National, State, and Local Government structures on December 8, 2020, and transferred its business over to an illegitimate group.

“Moreover, the PDP notifies such hopefuls that the widespread intractable infighting for the soul of the defunct APC by ferocious’political warlords’ is not for election considerations, but for control of APC structures as pedestals to further plunder public funds before and during the elections.”

“The PDP urges Nigerians to recognize that the APC has begun an unavoidable spiral towards self-inflicted political extinction as a result of its activities.”

“As our party takes strong moves to democratically take over power in 2023 in our quest to Rescue and Rebuild our nation from the rudderless, nasty, clueless, and visionless APC, we urge Nigerians to be vigilant and hopeful.”
