Chief Edwin Clark, a prominent Nigerian nationalist and former Information Minister, has endorsed Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi for President in the 2023 general election.

Clark, who met with Umahi during a consultation visit at his Abuja residence, insisted that the next President of Nigeria would be a core Igbo.

He urged ethnic groups to rally behind Ndigbo in order to enthrone leaders like Umahi and save the country from collapse.

“When I say I want a president of Igbo extraction, I don’t mean someone from Delta or Rivers State or anywhere else safe from a pure southeast Igbo president,” he says.

“Igbo is my first choice.” So, my son, I’ve heard you, I’ve prayed for you, and God will give you whatever you deserve.

“When you defected to APC, I asked why; we’re all fighting for the same cause, but if the PDP, which we the Igbos served, abandons the Igbos 100 percent, then we’ll all abandon the PDP, as I’ve already told them.”

He also praised Umahi for his achievements in Ebonyi State’s infrastructure.

“You have all the qualities,” he said, “and God will protect you and grant you the grace to achieve all your desires in good health and long life.”

In a previous remark, Umahi thanked the elder statesman for his blessings and promised that if given the chance, he would turn around Nigeria’s fortunes.

“If God has mercy on this country, I believe He will not raise a pure professional politician to be Nigeria’s president.” Nigeria requires a business-minded individual who is also familiar with our political environment, as well as someone who can engage effectively.

“It will be very difficult for our country to unite without engagement, without determining what the people’s problems are, and without fairness, equity, and justice.”

“What we don’t realize is that both good and bad leaders are created by God. When God is pleased with the people, He sends them good leaders, but when He is dissatisfied with them, He sends them bad leaders. So, when people criticize leaders, they are criticizing God, so we turn our gaze to God, pleading with God to show mercy on us,” he explained.
